Like with nearly any popular website or service these days, they use Google Adsense advertisements generate income profit, providing the service free generates traffic and the more it's used generates higher income for each part of the service, anytime you open a webpage on the website. On any website you want to block ad's you'd have to disable image display and scripting, but this more than likely would cause navigation and other content loading problems so I wouldn't recommend it.
In fact, anything you do at all on their website, clicking on anything pretty much generates income because the ad's are always displayed. With millions of users using the service all the time regularly, the more the more money they get.
